Today we started our first day of committee sessions for my MMUN conference. The purpose of this conference is to engage kids with significant issues around the world and learn what they have to say about those issues. I am a member of the bureau and I worked as a Vice-chair and Scribe for the Middle School FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) committee. As a member of the bureau, I help guide the delegates when they are writing their resolutions and discussing the topic. The first topic for my committee was green jobs as an effective framework for sustainable agriculture. As the vice-chair and scribe, I wrote down all of the delegate's ideas for subtopics of the main topic and displayed all of the instruction videos. When we were in informal consultation to start writing the resolutions I stayed with one subtopic group. When with this subtopic group I helped guide them through the resolution process and helped them write their operative and preambulatory phrases when needed. However, I mainly observed the process because it is their work, not mine, but if they needed help or new materials I made sure I was there for them. After they wrote their resolutions I also helped provide guidance for the first merging of papers, where papers 1 and 2 were combined and 3 and 4 were combined. After that, I wrote the merging process for the final two papers we had and formated them of the resolution document. It was really great to see all the work the delegates did to come up with solutions for this topic because it is very important for youth to have a voice in issues in the world that will eventually affect them too.
Yesterday, my high school had our Lunar New Year celebration. For the past three years, I have been organizing the celebrations. This year, the teacher who supervises my planning wanted to have our celebration with the middle school, so we can get more students involved. I thought this was a great idea, but I was at first worried about how we would accommodate a lot more people in our activities, as we would be going from about 110 people to 180. This meant that I had to purchase a lot more materials for each activity so that all students and faculty could get participate. We also wanted to make sure we all were staying together and really integrating middle school and high school. For Lunar New Year, we always provide lunch, so I thought it would be good to serve food in the middle school, then require that everyone eats in the high school or on the quad. This way, we were all staying together instead of separating into our building. I think that this worked well to keep us all togeth...
