Yesterday, my high school had our Lunar New Year celebration. For the past three years, I have been organizing the celebrations. This year, the teacher who supervises my planning wanted to have our celebration with the middle school, so we can get more students involved. I thought this was a great idea, but I was at first worried about how we would accommodate a lot more people in our activities, as we would be going from about 110 people to 180. This meant that I had to purchase a lot more materials for each activity so that all students and faculty could get participate. We also wanted to make sure we all were staying together and really integrating middle school and high school. For Lunar New Year, we always provide lunch, so I thought it would be good to serve food in the middle school, then require that everyone eats in the high school or on the quad. This way, we were all staying together instead of separating into our building. I think that this worked well to keep us all together during lunch. For the other activities, it was pretty easy to get us all together. The first activity was a presentation that the middle school made, and we were all able to fit into the high school to listen to it. Then we had a lion dance, which we watched on the basketball court. After the lion dance, we had our chopstick relay race, which was a lot harder to supervise with a lot more teams playing. Keeping cheating to a minimum was difficult, but everyone seemed to have a lot of fun and were happy with the outcome of the race. I think that overall the celebration was a success and really fun, and I am really proud of myself for being able to plan an event for a really large amount of people and have it be successful. It seemed like people really enjoyed the celebration and got to learn a lot about Lunar New Year and how it is celebrated.
For the past two weeks, my school has been in A-Term. A- Term is a two-week period where we study something intensively for two weeks. There are group options and people can also do independent A-Terms. This year I did a San Francisco city study A-Term, with a group of students. We spent a week in San Francisco learning about the culture and different districts there. My favorite day that we spent in San Francisco was the day that we went to the Exploratorium, which is a science museum near Fisherman's Wharf. In the afternoon that day, we went to Golden Gate Park, where we explored the Japanese Tea Garden, did a 3-mile hike, saw bison, and went to the tulip garden. The park was so beautiful. I also really enjoyed our tour of Chinatown, because we got to learn a lot about the traditions and history of San Francisco's Chinatown. Traveling in a group is definitely quite difficult because it is a lot of people going to places together and I spent a whole week with people that I was...
