This week at my MMUN  (Montessori Model United Nations) internship with the upper elementary students, we were working on their speeches. We just finished the student's position papers so it is now time to work on the speeches that they will be presenting to their committee room. When I got to the room my internship supervisor, Ms. Sood, asked me to time each of the student speeches. When they are at the actual Montessori Model United Nations Conference their speeches are only allowed to be 1 minute long, so as an intern it is part of my job to make sure that they are staying under that 1-minute limit. the students were presenting in front of each other in order to practice saying a speech in front of other people. Since I was timing I considered whether or not I should share the times of each person's speech. I decided against this because I thought that since this is a younger age group (9-11 years old) some students would not like or be able to handle the possible embarrassment that would come from me saying their speech was too long. I am also not very familiar with all the students, so I did not want to mention all the times, as I didn't know how each student would react. I did, however, mention at the end of all of the speeches that some people did go over 1 minute, so I suggested that everyone times their speech again and make edits as needed. Also, some students did approach me after asking if they were over on their speeches, so I was able to privately offer some suggestions to each student. Overall, I am very happy with my decision here.

Yesterday, my high school had our Lunar New Year celebration. For the past three years, I have been organizing the celebrations. This year, the teacher who supervises my planning wanted to have our celebration with the middle school, so we can get more students involved. I thought this was a great idea, but I was at first worried about how we would accommodate a lot more people in our activities, as we would be going from about 110 people to 180. This meant that I had to purchase a lot more materials for each activity so that all students and faculty could get participate. We also wanted to make sure we all were staying together and really integrating middle school and high school. For Lunar New Year, we always provide lunch, so I thought it would be good to serve food in the middle school, then require that everyone eats in the high school or on the quad. This way, we were all staying together instead of separating into our building. I think that this worked well to keep us all togeth...

For the past two weeks, my school has been in A-Term. A- Term is a two-week period where we study something intensively for two weeks. There are group options and people can also do independent A-Terms. This year I did a San Francisco city study A-Term, with a group of students. We spent a week in San Francisco learning about the culture and different districts there. My favorite day that we spent in San Francisco was the day that we went to the Exploratorium, which is a science museum near Fisherman's Wharf. In the afternoon that day, we went to Golden Gate Park, where we explored the Japanese Tea Garden, did a 3-mile hike, saw bison, and went to the tulip garden. The park was so beautiful. I also really enjoyed our tour of Chinatown, because we got to learn a lot about the traditions and history of San Francisco's Chinatown. Traveling in a group is definitely quite difficult because it is a lot of people going to places together and I spent a whole week with people that I was...

As part of my school's Odyssey Week, we spend the day at Brazos Bend State Park. While we were there the school held a cooking competition, in which we were all split into groups of about six to nine people. At the beginning of the day, we got into our groups and worked together to figure out the meal we would be making. Since there were a lot of us, I had to make sure that I was actively listening to everyone's opinions and dietary restrictions. Listening is a very important skill for group work and I think that I was able to use that skill well when trying to figure out our meal plan. We all agreed on making chicken kabobs, salad, and smores. I and another person from my group then went to the store to buy all of the items we would need for our meal. Going to the store with another person was very beneficial because we were able to split up the work or calculating the prices and finding items, which made the whole shopping process go a lot quicker. I was als...
